Diabetes Termed `Madhumeha' in Ayurveda, its incidence is higher amongst the older and the obese. Originating from an absolute or relative lack of insulin, it gives way to abnormalities in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fat in the body. Characterised by abnormally high levels of blood glucose and its subsequent excretion

In Ayurveda diabetes is known as Madhumeha and is classified as a kapha type of disorder. Ayurveda identifies 20 types of diabetes - 4 due to Vata, 6 results from Pitta, and 10 are caused by Kapha. Technically speaking Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder in which the body is unable to make proper use of glucose resulting in hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and glycosuria (sugar in urine).

The other formost cause of Diabetes is impaired digestion as it leads to accumulation of specific digestive impurities (known as ama) which accumulate in the pancreatic cells and impair the production of insulin.

The treatment of Diabetes recommended in Ayurveda as against modern medicine is aimed at rejuvenating the body to not only balance sugar levels, but also foster a positive change in the patient's life. Ayurvedic medicines work on the root cause of the disease, strengthening the patient's immunity, enhancing digestion and helping him lead an overall healthy life. Along with medication, dietary and lifestyle changes are also recommended to rejuvenate the body's cells and tissues, allowing them to produce insulin properly.
Symptoms: Constant feeling of hunger and thirst. Weight loss Quick exhaustion. Drowsiness. Low sexual urge. Possible anaemia, constipation, itching around genital organs, palpitation. Slow healing of wounds. rashes.
Poorly managed diabetes can lead to a host of long-term complications like:
Heart attacks.
Strokes.
Blindness.
Nerve damage.
Amputation of Limb.
Impotence in men. Pruritus (Itching)
Root Causes: Overeating and consequent obesity Excessive intake of sugar and refined carbohydrates Overloading of proteins and fats which get converted into sugar if taken in excess. Excessive tension, worry, anxiety grief Hereditary factors .
Ironically, the unfortunate reality is that not many diabetics actually know this simple fact that a large number of cases of diabetes and its complications can be prevented by a healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight, and avoiding tobacco. In most countries, especially the developing ones, diabetes patients are accustomed to believing that insulin injections and regular medicines are their only reprieves things that will keep them going for a lifetime. And this far from the truth!

Ayurveda says sugar levels can be kept under control with the help of proper medication and a strict diet-lifestyle plan. Because Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder that arises when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces, it can only be treated if the body is rejuvenated in its entirety.

According to allopathic model Diabetes primarily comes in two types- Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. While Type 1 deals with the condition where your body is unable to produce insulin at all, Type 2 is where the patient's body doesn't produce enough amount of insulin or the body cells don't react to the insulin produced by the body. Type 2 is usually responsible for 90% of the diabetes cases and its patients primarily rely upon insulin injection and other means for their insulin requirement.

Having bitter gourd cooked in ghee for a period of three months will bring the diabetes down by a significant amount.
A tablespoon of Indian gooseberry juice mixed with a cup of fresh bitter-gourd juice, taken daily for two months will enable the pancreas to secrete insulin.
Drinking a glass of water with 10 tulsi leaves, 10 neem leaves and 10 belpatras early morning on an empty stomach helps in keeping sugar levels under control.
Mix and grind seeds of Fenugreek (100 gm), turmeric (50gm), white pepper. Take one teaspoon of this powder with a glass of milk twice daily.

Healing Options: Generally a patient of Diabetes feels that if his/her bloood sugar levels are normal, he is perfectly alright. As a result doctors prescribe pancreatic stimulants to the patient which compel the pancreas to secrete more and more of insulin and the blood sugar levels are reduced. But then making the already damaged/compromised pancreas overwork under the effects of pancreatic stimulants is very wrong approach due to which the pancreas is completely damaged after some time and the patient gradually has to shift to insulin injections. We at N.D. Healthcare and Panchkarma centre uses those herbs which repair the damaged beta cells of the pancreas gradually repairing them. At the same time our medicines contain plant inslin which decreases the workload of the pancreas helping it to recover. As a result of our treatment the pancreas gets repaired to the desirable extent thus decreasing the dependence of the patient on the medicines. Moreover our medicines being metabolism correctors also control the occurrence of diabetes related complications like diabetic nephropathy, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic retinopathy.
